In the United States, every state in the nation has a sex offender registry. A sex offender is required to become of part of this registry and if they fail to do so they can be arrested and charged again for failing to register. The basis of a sex offender registry can be traced back to the early 1990s in which a young girl was raped and killed by a convicted child predator. This avoidable tragic event received national outrage that sparked Megans Law, this means that anyone who has been convicted of any kind of sex related crime must be put on a list which then will label them as a sex offender. Anyone who is put on the sex offender registry will remain on the list until they are deceased and again depending on what state that the sex offender lives in, they must re-register at least every six months or year. The general registry process entails the offenders height and weight, color of hair and eyes, and other distinguishing marks that they may have.
The sex offender registry is a great tool for employers as well as parents.
